Supporting Community Safety at Grange Road Baptist Church
On Saturday 21st February, First Aid and Safety Training delivered an onsite Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course for Grange Road Baptist Church in Jarrow.
Holding the course on a weekend ensured maximum attendance, allowing 12 church members and volunteers to take part without impacting weekday commitments. The result was a full, lively session focused on building confidence, practical skills, and community readiness.
Preparing Volunteers to Act with Confidence
Churches and community venues often host a wide range of activities — services, children’s groups, social events, food banks, and outreach sessions. With visitors of all ages attending regularly, having trained first aiders on site is essential.
For many learners, the idea of being responsible for first aid initially felt daunting. However, through clear instruction and hands-on practice, that concern quickly turned into reassurance and confidence.
One of the most important elements of the day was practising with a training defibrillator, reinforcing the skills needed to use the Red Sky Foundation defibrillator located at the front of the church — a device the congregation had successfully fundraised to install.
Understanding how to use the defibrillator confidently means that, should it ever be needed, trained volunteers are ready to act immediately.
What the Emergency First Aid at Work Course Covered
The Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work qualification equips learners with essential life-saving skills. Throughout the day, the group covered:
- The role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
- Assessing an incident safely and effectively
- Adult CPR and safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Managing the unconscious casualty
- Choking emergencies
- External bleeding and shock
The practical elements were a highlight of the session, with learners practising CPR and choking scenarios repeatedly to ensure confidence and competence.
A Fun and Supportive Learning Environment
Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, the atmosphere was described as fun, engaging, and supportive. The group enjoyed a social lunch together during the day, which strengthened the sense of teamwork and community.
The relaxed delivery style allowed plenty of time for questions and discussion, ensuring everyone felt comfortable and supported throughout.
