Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work – Sunderland

On 12th March 2026, First Aid and Safety Training delivered a Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course at our Sunderland venue. The group was another great example of how open courses bring together people from very different roles, all united by one goal — being ready to act in an emergency.

Learners on this course included representatives from:

  • Hebburn Litter Pickers
  • AquAid Tyne and Wear
  • Trainers from Sunderland Climbing Wall

From community volunteers and workplace teams to climbing instructors responsible for safety at height, the mix of backgrounds created valuable discussion around real-life risk and responsibility.

First Aid That Reflects Real-World Risk

Each organisation represented on the course faces very different working environments:

  • Volunteers working outdoors in public spaces
  • Delivery and service teams travelling across the region
  • Climbing instructors supervising physically demanding activities

Throughout the day, we explored how emergency first aid principles apply in each of these settings. Discussions covered how to remain calm in busy environments, how to manage incidents when others are watching, and how to prioritise actions before emergency services arrive.

The diversity of experience made the training relatable and grounded in reality.

What the Course Covered

The Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work qualification equips learners with the essential skills required to respond to life-threatening situations.

Core elements covered included:

  • The role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
  • Assessing an incident and managing scene safety
  • Adult CPR
  • Safe and effective use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Managing the unconscious casualty
  • Choking emergencies
  • External bleeding, wounds, and shock

Practical assessments were completed throughout the day to ensure learners could demonstrate competence and confidence in CPR, AED use, choking management and casualty care.

Keeping Training Engaging and Memorable

Emergency First Aid training is serious by nature, but that does not mean it needs to feel heavy or overwhelming. This session was described as fun, engaging and easy to follow — key factors in helping learners retain important information.

When people are relaxed and involved, they absorb more. The day balanced:

  • Clear explanations
  • Demonstration-led learning
  • Repeated practical exercises
  • Open discussion and questions

By the end of the session, learners were visibly more confident performing CPR and responding to simulated scenarios.
