First aid training for different sectors can lead to some particularly useful discussions, because the emergencies people may face can vary considerably between workplaces.

That was certainly the case when First Aid and Safety Training delivered a Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course at Bede Tower in Sunderland on 26 February 2026.

The course brought together learners from three Sunderland organisations:

With sport, community work and care services represented, learners could relate the first aid skills they were practising to very different working environments.

First Aid Training for Different Sectors

The fundamental first aid skills taught on an Emergency First Aid at Work course remain the same, but the situations in which people might need them can be very different.

Someone working in a busy sports environment may face different risks from someone supporting people in the community or working within a care setting.

Having learners from different sectors therefore encouraged useful discussion throughout the day.

Rather than simply learning a sequence of actions, learners could consider how an emergency might actually happen in their workplace and how they would respond.

Making Important First Aid Skills Stick

Emergency First Aid at Work covers potentially life-saving skills.

However, simply presenting information does not necessarily mean someone will remember what to do when faced with a real emergency.

Our approach to training combines:

clear explanations without unnecessary complexity
practical demonstrations
repeated hands-on practice
opportunities to ask questions
discussion about realistic situations
individual feedback from the trainer

The aim is to create an environment where learners feel comfortable getting involved and practising the skills themselves.

When someone has physically performed CPR, used a training AED or practised responding to a choking emergency, it can be much easier to understand what would be expected during a genuine incident.

Practical Emergency First Aid at Work Training

The Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work qualification prepares learners to respond to a range of workplace emergencies.

During the course, learners covered areas including:

the role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
assessing an incident safely
recognising an unresponsive casualty
adult CPR
safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
managing an unconscious casualty
responding to choking
controlling external bleeding
recognising and managing shock

Practical demonstrations were followed by learner practice and assessment.

This gave everyone the opportunity to perform the skills rather than simply watch them being demonstrated.

Connecting First Aid Training to Different Workplaces

One of the strengths of first aid training for different sectors is the opportunity to discuss how the same core skills may be needed in very different circumstances.

During this course, conversations included situations that could arise within:

busy sports environments
community organisations
care and support roles

The group was keen to get involved from the beginning, which created a positive and interactive training environment.

Regular breaks and refreshments helped maintain concentration, while moving between discussion, demonstrations and practical activities kept learners involved throughout the day.
