Supporting the Launch of Little Wings Nursery with Essential First Aid Skills
In February 2026, First Aid and Safety Training delivered the face-to-face practical element of a Level 3 Paediatric First Aid (Blended) course at Bowburn Primary School in Durham.
The session, completed on 20th February 2026, brought together six learners who will be taking on various roles at the newly launching Little Wings Nursery.
With a new nursery preparing to open its doors, ensuring staff are confident and fully qualified in paediatric first aid is not just a requirement — it is a fundamental responsibility.
Why Paediatric First Aid Matters in Early Years Settings
For anyone working with babies and young children, first aid training is essential. Children can deteriorate more quickly than adults, and early recognition of problems such as breathing difficulties, allergic reactions, or high temperatures can make a significant difference.
This blended Level 3 Paediatric First Aid course, fully EYFS and HSE compliant, ensured that staff were prepared not only to meet regulatory requirements but to feel confident in real-world situations.
The group included staff who will be working directly with children, as well as those supporting wider school and nursery operations — including kitchen roles. In early years settings, everyone plays a part in safeguarding children’s health and wellbeing.
The Blended Learning Approach
Before attending the practical day, learners completed the online element of the course. This covered:
- The roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
- Incident and casualty assessment
- Infection control and reporting procedures
- Recognition and management of conditions such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, meningitis, and allergic reactions
- Burns, fractures, head injuries, and minor childhood injuries
By the time learners arrived for the face-to-face training, they had a solid theoretical foundation. The focus of the practical day was on building hands-on confidence and competence.
A Practical, Engaging Day of Learning
The atmosphere throughout the day was described as fun, engaging, and supportive, with plenty of discussion and practical activity.
Key practical skills included:
- Infant and child CPR
- Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Managing the unconscious infant or child
- Choking emergencies
- External bleeding and shock
- Fractures, sprains, and soft tissue injuries
- Head, neck, and spinal injury management
Learners practised repeatedly, receiving feedback and reassurance to ensure they felt comfortable performing each skill. For several participants, this was the first time they had truly enjoyed first aid training — a reflection of the relaxed but professional delivery style.
Building Confidence for a New Nursery Team
With Little Wings Nursery preparing to welcome children, this training helped build not only individual confidence but also team reassurance. Staff were able to discuss potential scenarios they may encounter in a nursery environment — from allergic reactions at snack time to playground injuries — and explore how they would respond calmly and effectively.
By the end of the session, the group had strengthened both their knowledge and their collective confidence, ready to support the safety of children in their care.

Learner Feedback
