On-Site Emergency First Aid at Work Training That Built Confidence and Team Connection
On 6th January 2026, First Aid and Safety Training delivered a Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course on-site for Bright Futures North East. The training took place at the Community Hub, John Williamson Street, allowing staff to learn together in a familiar, relaxed setting.
The course was attended by 6 learners, all female, with varied roles across the organisation and wider South Tyneside area. Although all learners had completed first aid training previously, the aim of this session was to refresh skills, rebuild confidence, and make the training genuinely engaging and relevant.
Moving Beyond “Tick-Box” First Aid Training
Before the course, learners shared that previous first aid training experiences had often felt serious, rigid, and difficult to engage with, which made learning feel like hard work rather than something meaningful. For this course, the focus was on creating a supportive and informal learning environment where learners could actively participate, ask questions, and learn from each other.
Group discussion played a key role throughout the day. As learners shared past experiences and reflected on their roles, there was a growing awareness of just how relevant first aid skills are in everyday working life, regardless of job title or setting.
Practical Learning in a Relaxed Environment
The course content covered the core elements of Emergency First Aid at Work, with strong emphasis on visual learning and hands-on practice.
Practical skills included:
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Managing the unconscious casualty
- Choking emergencies
- Bleeding and wound care
Training was delivered at a steady, learner-friendly pace, with regular breaks and time built in for discussion and reflection. Timings were also adjusted with a slightly later start to suit the team, helping everyone arrive relaxed and ready to engage.
Team Building Through Shared Learning
Although first aid training is often viewed purely as a compliance requirement, this course also delivered clear team-building benefits. Staff who did not regularly work together were able to:
- Learn more about each other’s roles
- Share experiences in a safe and supportive setting
- Build trust and confidence as a group
These discussions helped reinforce the message that first aid is relevant to everyone and that learning together strengthens both skills and teamwork.
