A Busy, Practical Day of Lifesaving Skills
Our latest Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) open course in South Shields was completely full, bringing together a wide mix of learners from local schools, businesses, and the wider community.
Delivered at One Trinity Green, the course welcomed teachers and school staff, representatives from Templetown Canopies, The Skin Gym, and several individuals attending for personal reasons who wanted the confidence to respond in an emergency.
It was a busy, energetic session with a broad range of experience levels — from complete beginners to those renewing previous qualifications.
A Course That Connects With Everyone
One of the strengths of open Emergency First Aid courses is the mix of sectors and perspectives in the room. Teachers discussed scenarios relevant to classroom and playground settings. Business owners explored how first aid responsibilities apply in customer-facing environments. Others simply wanted peace of mind for everyday life.
Regardless of background, everyone shared a common goal: to know what to do if someone collapses, chokes, or suffers a serious injury.
Throughout the day, we ensured the training was clear, structured, and accessible so that learners of all abilities felt confident participating.
What the Emergency First Aid at Work Course Covered
The Level 3 EFAW qualification equips learners with essential life-saving skills required in workplace and community settings. The course covered:
- The role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
- Assessing an incident and ensuring scene safety
- Recognising life-threatening conditions
- Adult CPR and safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Managing the unconscious casualty
- Choking emergencies
- Wounds, bleeding, and shock
A strong emphasis was placed on hands-on practice, ensuring that every learner had multiple opportunities to perform CPR, use a training AED, and work through practical scenarios before completing their assessments.
Practical Assessments Made Easy Through Practice
Rather than rushing through demonstrations, we built in plenty of time for repetition and feedback. By the time learners completed their practical assessments in CPR, AED use, choking management, and casualty care, they were comfortable and confident.
This approach ensures that assessments are not stressful — because learners have already practised each skill thoroughly throughout the day.
