Practical, Engaging First Aid Training at Bede Tower

On 26th February 2026, First Aid and Safety Training delivered a Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course at our Sunderland venue, Bede Tower.

The course brought together a strong mix of learners from Sunderland-based organisations, including:

  • Goals Sunderland
  • Happy Hands
  • Step Forward Care

With different sectors represented — sport, community work, and care services — the group had varied experiences and responsibilities. This diversity helped create a lively, discussion-led environment where learners could connect the training directly to their own workplaces.

Making Vital Information Stick

Emergency First Aid at Work covers serious, potentially life-saving skills. However, the way that information is delivered makes all the difference in how well it is understood and retained.

Our approach focuses on:

  • Clear explanations without unnecessary complexity
  • Practical demonstrations followed by repeated hands-on practice
  • Encouraging questions and open discussion
  • Keeping energy levels high without losing professionalism

When learners feel relaxed and engaged, they are far more likely to remember what to do under pressure.

What the Course Covered

The Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work qualification equips learners to respond confidently in workplace emergencies. The session covered:

  • The role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider
  • Assessing an incident safely and effectively
  • Adult CPR and safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Managing the unconscious casualty
  • Choking emergencies
  • External bleeding and shock
  • Basic wound and injury management

Throughout the day, learners completed practical assessments in CPR, AED use, choking management, and casualty care, ensuring competence and confidence by the end of the session.

A Positive, Interactive Atmosphere

This was a highly interactive group who were keen to get involved from the start. There was plenty of discussion about how first aid situations might present in:

  • Busy sports environments
  • Community settings
  • Care and support roles

Regular breaks and refreshments helped maintain focus, and the balance between theory and practical sessions kept the pace comfortable and productive.
