A Paediatric First Aid certificate is normally valid for three years.

For early years providers in England, this is particularly important because the Early Years Foundation Stage, EYFS, statutory framework requires Paediatric First Aid training to be renewed every three years.

That does not mean you should wait until the certificate has expired before arranging another course.

Nurseries, schools, childminders and other early years providers should keep track of certificate expiry dates and arrange renewal early enough to maintain the first aid cover they need.

How Long Is a Paediatric First Aid Certificate Valid?

A full Paediatric First Aid, PFA, certificate is normally valid for:

Three years

The current EYFS statutory framework for England states that Paediatric First Aid training must be renewed every three years.

This applies to staff whose PFA certificate is being relied upon to meet the relevant EYFS requirements.

The important date is the expiry date shown on the certificate.

For example, if your certificate is due to expire in February, do not assume you can simply renew it at any point during that calendar year.

Where the qualification is required for your role or your setting’s first aid arrangements, the safest approach is to complete the required renewal training before the existing certificate expires.

Does Paediatric First Aid Expire?

Yes.

A Paediatric First Aid certificate does not remain current indefinitely.

Once its validity period has ended, it should not continue to be treated as a current certificate.

That is particularly significant for early years providers.

The EYFS does not simply require somebody to have completed PFA at some point in the past. It refers to staff holding a current full Paediatric First Aid certificate.

An expired certificate therefore cannot simply be relied upon as evidence of current PFA provision.

When Should I Renew My Paediatric First Aid Certificate?

Do not leave renewal until the final few days.

A better approach is to monitor expiry dates and arrange training well in advance.

This is particularly important where an organisation has only a small number of people holding full PFA.

Consider a nursery with two full PFA certificate holders.

If both certificates expire at approximately the same time and the renewal course is cancelled, staff are absent or there is no suitable course availability, the setting could suddenly find itself without the PFA coverage it had planned for.

A simple training register can prevent this.

Setting a reminder several months before expiry gives you time to organise training without unnecessary pressure.

Can I Renew Paediatric First Aid Before It Expires?

Yes, and in many cases that is the sensible way to manage it.

There is little benefit in deliberately waiting until the final moment if the certificate is important to your role or your organisation’s staffing arrangements.

Employers should plan around operational requirements rather than certificate dates alone.

For example, renewal may need to take account of:

• Staff holidays
• Sickness
• Maternity leave
• Shift patterns
• Training availability
• School holidays
• Nursery staffing ratios
• Planned outings
• Other employees’ certificate expiry dates

Staggering renewal dates can also help prevent several important certificates expiring together.

What Happens If My Paediatric First Aid Certificate Expires?

Once the certificate has expired, it is no longer a current PFA certificate.

For somebody taking a course voluntarily, that may simply mean arranging new training before they want to rely on the qualification again.

For an early years provider, the consequences can be more significant.

If an expired certificate means the setting no longer has the required current full PFA provision, the organisation needs to address that immediately.

The important issue is not simply that a piece of paper has passed its expiry date.

It is whether the setting can still meet its responsibilities.

Do I Get a Grace Period After My PFA Certificate Expires?

You should not plan your first aid provision around an assumed grace period.

Where a current qualification is required, the sensible approach is to arrange renewal before expiry.

Allowing certificates to expire and then hoping they will remain acceptable for several additional weeks creates an unnecessary compliance risk.

This is particularly avoidable because PFA certificates normally provide a long period in which renewal can be planned.

Treat the expiry date as a deadline, not the beginning of the renewal process.

How Do You Renew a Paediatric First Aid Certificate?

For a full EYFS-compliant Paediatric First Aid certificate, renewal involves completing appropriate PFA training that meets the relevant requirements.

The full course involves a minimum of 12 hours of training.

This may be delivered through traditional face-to-face training or through an appropriate blended-learning format combining online learning with face-to-face practical training and assessment.

Do not assume that a short refresher session automatically renews a full PFA certificate.

Is There a Shorter Paediatric First Aid Renewal Course?

This is an area where people sometimes confuse Paediatric First Aid with First Aid at Work.

First Aid at Work has a specific requalification route with a shorter minimum duration than the initial FAW course.

You should not automatically apply that system to Paediatric First Aid.

For full PFA being used to meet EYFS requirements, the training leading to the certificate or renewal certificate needs to meet the applicable PFA criteria.

A half-day skills refresher may be useful for maintaining confidence, but it should not be confused with renewal of the full qualification.

A full Paediatric First Aid course requires a minimum of:

It is commonly delivered over two days.

Appropriate blended learning may allow some of that learning to be completed online, with the remaining element completed through face-to-face practical training and assessment.

The qualification covers a broad range of emergencies involving babies and children.

These include areas such as:

• Assessing an emergency
• Unresponsive babies and children
• CPR
• Choking
• Seizures
• Bleeding
• Shock
• Anaphylaxis
• Fractures
• Head, neck and back injuries
• Burns and scalds
• Poisoning
• Asthma

• Diabetes
• Other childhood illnesses and emergencies

The practical component is important because learners need to demonstrate first aid skills, not simply understand the theory.

How Long Is Emergency Paediatric First Aid Valid?

Emergency Paediatric First Aid, EPFA, is a separate qualification from full Paediatric First Aid.

The course itself has a minimum training duration of six hours.

Where it is being used within EYFS arrangements, training also needs to remain current and PFA training is renewed every three years.

However, holding Emergency PFA does not automatically mean somebody meets a requirement that specifically calls for a full PFA certificate.

That distinction is important when planning staffing.

What Is the Difference Between Full PFA and Emergency PFA?

Emergency Paediatric First Aid concentrates on essential life-threatening emergencies.

Full PFA covers a considerably broader range of injuries and medical conditions.

In simple terms:

What Are the EYFS Paediatric First Aid Requirements?

Early years providers in England need to pay particular attention to PFA provision.

Under the current EYFS framework, at least one person with a current full Paediatric First Aid certificate must be on the premises and available whenever children are present.

A person with an appropriate current PFA certificate must also accompany children on outings.

Providers also need to consider factors such as:

• Number of children
• Number of staff
• Layout of the premises
• Ability of a paediatric first aider to respond quickly

This is why the practical requirement may be greater than simply having one qualified person employed by the organisation.

What Is the PFA Requirement While Children Are Eating?

The current EYFS framework includes an important requirement around mealtimes.

While children are eating, there should always be a member of staff in the room who holds a valid full Paediatric First Aid certificate.

That makes certificate validity particularly important.

Imagine that a nursery has one member of staff with full PFA and several others with Emergency PFA.

If the full PFA certificate expires, the setting cannot simply assume that the Emergency PFA certificates automatically satisfy a requirement specifically referring to a valid full PFA certificate.

This is another reason to manage renewal dates proactively.

Do All Nursery Staff Need a Valid PFA Certificate?

Not necessarily.

The EYFS contains several PFA requirements, and they need to be considered together rather than reduced to “everyone needs PFA” or “only one person needs PFA”.

There must be appropriate full PFA coverage whenever children are present, including the current requirements around eating and outings.

There are also requirements affecting certain Level 2 and Level 3 early years staff and whether they can be included in staff-to-child ratios.

A setting may therefore decide to train considerably more people than the absolute minimum necessary.

That can provide much better resilience when employees are absent, on breaks, accompanying children away from the premises or working in different rooms.

Does PFA Validity Apply to Childminders?

Childminders working within the EYFS framework need to meet the PFA requirements that apply to their provision.

For a childminder working alone, allowing a required PFA certificate to expire can be particularly problematic because there may be no other qualified employee available to provide cover.

Keeping renewal dates under control should therefore form part of normal business administration.

Does Paediatric First Aid Need Refreshing Every Year?

The formal PFA renewal period is three years.

However, that does not mean practical skills should simply be ignored for three years.

Think about the skills involved:

• Baby CPR
• Child CPR
• Choking
• Recovery position
• Bleeding
• Seizures
• Anaphylaxis
• Emergency assessment

Hopefully, many learners will never need to use the most serious of these skills in a real emergency.

That is good, but it also means practical skills can fade.

Periodic refresher training or practice can help people maintain confidence between formal qualification courses.

A refresher should be seen as additional skills maintenance, not automatically as a replacement for the required PFA renewal.

Does PFA Include Anaphylaxis Training?

Yes.

Anaphylaxis forms part of Paediatric First Aid training.

However, PFA is a broad qualification covering many different paediatric emergencies. It is not a specialist allergy-management course.

Schools, nurseries and other organisations that want greater depth around allergies, anaphylaxis, prevention, emergency procedures and adrenaline devices may benefit from additional dedicated training.

Does a First Aid at Work Certificate Replace PFA?

Not where a full PFA certificate is specifically required.

First Aid at Work, FAW, and Paediatric First Aid, PFA, have different purposes.

FAW is designed around workplace first aid.

PFA concentrates specifically on babies and children and includes the requirements relevant to early years provision.

There is overlap in subjects such as CPR, choking, bleeding and medical emergencies, but holding one qualification does not automatically make the other unnecessary.

A school with early years provision, for example, may need to consider both workplace first aid and Paediatric First Aid.

Are FAST Paediatric First Aid Qualifications Regulated?

First Aid and Safety Training is an approved Qualsafe Awards Centre.

Qualsafe Awards is an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation.

This means the qualification is externally awarded and quality assured rather than being simply an attendance certificate created by FAST.

For employers and early years settings, it also provides a clear qualification and certification trail for their training records.

How Should Employers Track PFA Certificate Validity?

A simple training matrix is usually enough.

For every employee, record the qualification, completion date and expiry date.

Then introduce reminders.

For example:

Six months before expiry: review staffing and likely renewal requirements.

Three months before expiry: identify and book the required course.

One month before expiry: confirm attendance and make sure alternative PFA cover remains available.

After training: update the training register and retain the new certificate appropriately.

The exact timetable can be adjusted to suit the organisation.

The important thing is that renewal becomes a planned process rather than something discovered when somebody happens to notice an expired certificate.

Should All PFA Certificates Expire at the Same Time?

Ideally, avoid creating unnecessary single points of failure.

If an organisation sends all its PFA-trained employees on the same course, all of their certificates may subsequently have similar expiry dates.

Three years later, the organisation may need to renew everyone at once.

Staggering some training can make future planning easier.

It can also reduce the risk of losing a large proportion of the organisation’s qualified cover simultaneously.

This is particularly useful for nurseries, schools and organisations operating throughout the year.
